5 Common Plumbing Mistakes Homeowners Make (And How to Avoid Them)

From using harsh chemical cleaners to over-tightening connections, avoid these common errors to prevent expensive plumbing disasters.

1. Relying on Chemical Drain Cleaners

When a drain is clogged, many homeowners pour down liquid chemical cleaners. However, these chemicals generate extreme heat to break down clogs, which can warp or corrode modern PVC pipes and old metal joints. Use a standard rubber plunger or a manual hand-snake instead.

2. Over-Tightening Fittings and Pipe Joints

It is a common instinct to tighten a leaking pipe joint as hard as possible. Over-tightening plumbing connectors, bolts, or plastic fittings can strip threads or fracture the pipes, resulting in immediate or delayed flooding. Hand-tighten connections first, then add a quarter turn with a wrench.

3. Flushing 'Flushable' Wipes & Hygiene Products

Despite packaging claims, wipes do not break down in water like toilet paper. They snag in sewage elbows, collect grease, and create solid blockages ('fatbergs') that can back up your home's main drainage line. Keep a small bin in the bathroom for all wipes and hygiene products.

4. Ignoring Minor Slow Drains

A sink or shower that takes a few minutes to drain is a warning sign. Over time, hair, soap scum, and minerals accumulate, solidifying the blockage. Clearing a slow drain early with baking soda, vinegar, and hot water is much simpler than handling a fully backed-up pipe.

5. Working Without Shutting Off the Main Water Line

Never attempt to repair a valve, replace a tap, or fix a washing machine line without knowing where your home's main shut-off valve is located. If a pipe ruptures during the repair, you must be able to shut off the flow in seconds to avoid major water damage.
